It’s Monday, what are YOU reading? 2/20

mondayreading

I know I say this about once every 4 months but I'm doing it again.  In order to get back to my roots of just loving reading, I'm taking part in the weekly meme of It's Monday, What Are You Reading?, hosted by Book Journey.  It's easy - just post about what you're reading and link up on Book Journey.  Try to visit others and see what they're reading too! I'm actually in the middle of a few different books. I'm reading Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children to my son on the alternate nights I read to him.  I am enjoying it and find myself having to refrain from reading ahead. I'm also in the middle of  Triggered: A Memoir of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder for a review.  It doesn't release until late March but look out here for a review.  It helps me understand those that suffer from the disease a lot more.   I'm also supposed to be reading The Bellwether Revivals for review but for some reason, just had to move away from it for a bit.  I'll be back … [Read more...]

Words Spoken True by Ann H. Gabhart (Review & Blog Tour)

Words Spoken True is the newest novel by the author Ann H. Gabhart.  First a bit about the book: Adriane Darcy was practically raised in her father's newspaper offices. She can't imagine life without the clatter of the press and the push to be first to write the news that matters. Their Tribune is the leading paper in Louisville in 1855. Then Blake Garrett, a brash young editor from the North with a controversial new style of reporting, takes over failing competitor the Herald, and the battle for readers gets fierce. When Adriane and Blake meet at a benefit tea, their surprising mutual attraction is hard to ignore. Still, Blake is the enemy, and Adriane is engaged to the son of a powerful businessman who holds the keys to the Tribune's future. Blake will stop at almost nothing to get the story--and the girl. Can he do both before it's too late? Set against the volatile backdrop of political and civil unrest in 1850s Louisville, this exciting story of love and loyalty … [Read more...]

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Food and Love: 101 Stories Celebrating Special Times with Family and Friends... and Recipes Too!  is a new book out from the popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series.  This arrived on my doorstep and I was really anxious to read more about it. So I picked up this book to flip through and immediately became engrossed.  I read all sorts of stories involving food.  Some of them talked about loved ones passing on honored recipes.  Others talked of helping ill people heal with some lovingly crafted meals.  There were pieces about babies in utero pushing their vegetarian moms to partake of steak.  And still more essays about families having cooking competitions. … [Read more...]

The Orchid House by Lucinda Riley

The Orchid House is a new novel by Lucinda Riley.  Before I tell you how much I loved this book, let me give you a summary: Spanning from the 1930s to the present day, from the Wharton Park estate in England to Thailand, this sweeping novel tells the tale of a concert pianist and the aristocratic Crawford family, whose shocking secrets are revealed, leading to devastating consequences. As a child, concert pianist Julia Forrester spent many idyllic hours in the hothouse of Wharton Park, the grand estate where her grandfather tended exotic orchids. Years later, while struggling with overwhelming grief over the death of her husband and young child, she returns to this tranquil place. There she reunites with Kit Crawford, heir to the estate and her possible salvation. When they discover an old diary, Julia seeks out her grandmother to learn the truth behind a love affair that almost destroyed the estate. Their search takes them back to the 1940s when Harry, a former heir to … [Read more...]

Henry Helps with the Baby

Henry Helps with the Baby is a children's book written by Beth Bracken and illustrated by Ailie Busby.  It's part of a larger series of Henry Helps... books. This book is a cute little story about Henry and his baby sister Penny.  Since Penny is a baby, she needs a lot of help but Henry is able to help out a lot.  He gets things like diapers and burp clothes for his parents and entertains and soothes Penny. This book is targeted at ages 3 and up but I think even an older 2 year old would understand the premise.  My daughter was barely 2 when her brother arrived and I think this book would have gone a long way to helping her understand how a baby sibling would change her world.  She liked dolls but really didn't get it.  My son is now almost 4 and may even be older if/when a sibling comes along.  He's at that very helpful stage so I do feel that this book would make a huge impact upon him. I think this book would be best for those ages 3 to 5 who have a younger sibling … [Read more...]

But none of his victims has ever escaped - and he wants Mia back, more than he ever wanted any of the others. FBI agent Eric MacFarlane has pursued The Collector for a long time. The case runs deep in his veins, bordering on obsession.and Mia holds the key. She'll risk everything to recover her memory and bring the madman to justice, and Eric swears to protect this fierce, fragile survivor. But The Collector will not be denied. In his mind, he knows just how their story ends. This book was a bit confusing to me. … [Read more...]
