Beyond Hope’s Valley by Tricia Goyer (Blog Tour)

Beyond Hope’s Valley is the third book in the Big Sky series by Tricia Goyer.  Here’s a summary of the book:

After an extended stay in Montana, where Amish traditions are different than in her home state, Marianna Sommer returns to Indiana for two reasons, first to help her brother and his girlfriend prepare for a baby and their wedding. Second, to plan her own wedding to Aaron Zook — a marriage she’s been dreaming about ever since childhood. And yet, although she had missed the idyllic farms and families of her upbringing, Marianna is surprised that Indiana is somehow making her long now for Montana.

As months pass, secrets that were hidden in winter’s frozen grasp thaw and take on a life of their own. The truths about a child, about a past relationship, and about God’s plans are being revealed. Walking through a valley of questions, Marianna must hold on to hope as she decides where and with whom her heart truly belongs.

It was a bit of a struggle for me to get into this book.  I think this was because it had two books worth of previous material.  While this could be read as a stand-alone, I think it would be best enjoyed as part of the series.

I thought this novel tread on new ground by revealing that Marianna and her immediate family were straying somewhat from the traditional Amish upbringing.  I can’t imagine that this hasn’t happened before but I’ve never seen it talked about as adults looking in different directions with their faith.

I also appreciated the circumstances of Naomi’s baby being conceived out of wedlock.  It is a sign of the times that the book tells of other young brides having been with child when married.  It seems that even the Amish can’t escape from unexpected teen pregnancy.

I wasn’t sure what part the character of Mark played.  (I don’t want to say more in fear of spoiling the story.)  I don’t know if it was to show that everybody, even the Amish, are tempted sometimes or to show that marriage is extremely hard sometimes.  However, it did show that sometimes we don’t know a person is undergoing at times in their life and we just have to support them the best we can, as Ruth’s husband supported her.

Overall, Beyond Hope’s Valley is a look at modern Amish society.  It seems that outsiders wouldn’t really recognize many changes in the culture,  but I believe that modern life must make an impact somehow.
