Beyond Molasses Creek is the newest book from Nicole Seitz. Here’s a summary of the book:
Three lives are bound by a single book . . . and the cleansing waters of Molasses Creek.
Having traveled to the ends of the earth as a flight attendant, Ally Green has finally returned to the Lowcountry to bury her father as well as the past. But Vesey Washington is still living across the creek, and theirs is a complicated relationship—he was once her best friend . . . and also part of the reason she’s stayed away so long. When Ally discovers a message her father left behind asking her to quit running, it seems her past isn’t through with her yet.
As Ally’s wandering spirit wrestles with a deep longing to flee again, a young woman on the other side of the world escapes her life of slavery in the rock quarries of Nepal. A mysterious sketchbook leads Sunila Kunari to believe there’s more to her story than she’s ever been told, and she’s determined to follow the truth wherever it leads her.
A deep current intertwines the lives of these three souls, and a destiny of freedom, faith, and friendship awaits them all on the banks of Molasses Creek.
I was confused at first by reading the mentions of Sunila interspersed with Ally’s story. But the confusion clears slowly as we learn more about Sunila, her position in Nepal and what this mysterious book that she reclaims from owner of the quarry.
I am a sucker for Southern fiction and this book played right into that soft spot. I loved reading about how the certain Southern traditions and how certain things are “done”. Of course, Margaret’s pregnant granddaughter and Ally’s connection to Vesey totally disturb the Southern tradition but it’s amusing to see how they try to reconcile it with what they’ve been taught growing up.
The stunt that Ally’s father puts on for her is heartbreaking yet reassuring at the same time. Notes from our loved ones in Heaven would make so many of us feel so much better about those that we’ve lost. But then the act takes on a different slant when we learn that Ally has more family members in Heaven than we first are told, or so she believes.
****SPOILER***
The passing of Vesey which is followed almost immediately by the notification that Sunila may have been found is intriguing to me. To me, it seems like Vesey knew that Ally needed somebody to love in her life so he “sent” Sunila back to her. It also could be construed that Vesey knew that Ally would be torn between the two so left before she could ever find herself in that conflict.
***SPOILER OVER***
Beyond Molasses Creek took a few chapters to really engage me but after a bit I was thoroughly absorbed. I had trouble putting the book down. I do have to warn you that you will need tissues – this one is a tearjerker but I found my tears to be happy ones.
