Barbara’s Bakery helps you say “No!”

barbara

I may have puzzled you with the title of this post.  It's actually a positive thing - Barbara's Bakery helps you say no to the "bad stuff" in snacks and food while still getting some tasty nutrition! Barbara's says "NO" to: Hydrogenated Oils Artificial Flavors Artificial Preservatives Refined Sugar Trans Fats Artificial Additives High Fructose Corn Syrup You may be wondering just what Barbara's Bakery makes.  Well, I got the chance to try 4 products of theirs. The first product was one I ripped open immediately as soon as the package arrived:  High Fiber Cranberry cereal.  This cereal is like bran flakes but a million times as it is sweetened with pomegranate and has dried cranberries.  Even with all that, there is still only 11 grams of sugar per serving and even has 5 grams of protein!  I don't normally eat high fiber cereal but I could see making this a regular part of my diet - definitely delish and the pomegranate flavoring - awesome! I … [Read more...]

Treat your holiday guests (or yourself!) to Cracker Barrel cheeses

cheese

We are what I call "cheese fiends" in our house.  An 8 oz block of cheddar can be demolished in an hour, easy.  American cheese - gone!  But while we love our cheese, we stick to the wussy cheeses, like American, mozzarella and cheddar.  Occasionally swiss or provolone will make their way into our menu, but not all that often.  So when a new cheese from a brand that we consider tried and true comes along, we feel that it's safe to try without encountering something that we may not like. Cracker Barrel (and Kraft) has introduced two new Limited Edition Holiday Reserve Aged cheese for the holidays:  Extra Sharp Yellow Cheddar and Extra Sharp White Cheddar.  Yay - new cheeses to try and nothing too scary either. So I dove right in and tried the Yellow Cheddar.  I think this Holiday Reserve cheese is a step above the usual Cracker Barrel fare.  Not to say that Cracker Barrel generally is not good but is nothing spectacular.  However, the Holiday Reserve is very sharp and … [Read more...]

I've given a lot of gifts in my life, most them without tons of thought behind them.  I do enjoy thinking of what the recipients would enjoy and put some time into it, but I generally don't put much effort or time into what I do.  I don't do it for the gift back - I love seeing what the recipient thinks and knowing I nailed their personality and/or wants right on the head. One year, … [Read more...]

The Clouds Roll Away by Sibella Giorello – Blog Tour

clouds

The Clouds Roll Away by Sibella Giorello is the third book in the Raleigh Harmon series.  Raleigh is a forensic geologist and a FBI agent.  She is recently back in Virginia, off of a disciplinary transfer to Seattle.  She is learning to deal with her mother when she gets involved in what appears to be a case of extreme racism on the grounds of a rapper's estate.  While investigating this case, Raleigh is assigned to a gang/drug surveillance and finds the two cases slowly showing associations. While this book is billed as Christian fiction, I found very few mentions of God and the like.  Actually, it was refreshing to have a suspense/crime novel with the forensics involved (which I love) that didn't have any sex.  I actually though it was very sweet how Raleigh's beau DeMott was very gentle with her, not demanding much.  Of course, I don't know the whole back story behind them. Also, while this book is third in the series, I had no problem reading it as a stand-alone.  That … [Read more...]

SpongeBob SquarePants is back for Season 6 – DVD Review

spongebob6-2

As you can tell from another of my SpongeBob reviews, we love us some SpongeBob.  However, I find that the older ones get shown over and over until I want to pull my hair out (or pull a Squidward and run away). So I was ecstatic when I received a copy of SpongeBob SquarePants: Season 6, Volume 2 on DVD.  I started naming the episodes to my husband, along with the descriptions, and he claimed he had seen about half of them.  (I think he needs a new hobby) Anyway, I put this to the kid test.  We started watching these in the car during our two days a week we spend quite some time in there.  And this DVD (well, the two discs) passed with flying colors.  The episodes are short (like 10-15 minutes each) so even the most annoying ones are quickly over.  But really, nothing was annoying to me because these were all new to me!  Nothing better than brand-spankin' new Spongebob. What I love most about SpongeBob is how much of the humor is meant for adults but it's so subtle that the … [Read more...]

Mrs. Prindable’s delivers amazing gourmet treats!

prindable

I'm sure you've seen those delicious-looking, ginormous, chocolate-covered apples around.  As have I, and I've always lusted after them.  Then I found out who makes them - Mrs. Prindable's.  Mrs. Prindable's has been serving up gourmet treats, the most famous being their apples, for over 25 years.  And there's a reason for it - everything is freshly made and of the utmost top quality, including their caramel. I know, I know, all of this is just blabber unless you actually get to taste one.  Well, I did, and I'm here to say I'm sold.  My family was sent the Triple Chocolate Jumbo Caramel Apple to try out.    I ripped into that gift box but managed to restrain myself enough to get a few pictures for you.  Here's how the apple is packaged: Very pretty, right? And here it is out of the cellophane: So, even though they said it would serve 8-10 people, I was a bit skeptical.  I mean, really, it's just an apple with chocolate on the outside, we surely could destroy that, … [Read more...]
