*CLOSED* Forget You by Jennifer Echols – Blog Tour and Giveaway

forgetyou

Forget You by Jennifer Echols is a young adult novel.  Zoey is captain of the swim team and hates Doug with all of her guts.  The feeling is mutual.  Zoey decides to have sex with her best guy friend, Brandon, which she feels make them an item, but Brandon disagrees.   Amidst all of this, Zoey has to deal with a suicidal mother and the fact that her father impregnated a 24 year old.   Further adding to the confusion is Zoey's car accident, which leads to a romantic embrace with Doug, and him treating her like his girlfriend. Zoey can't remember what happened and tries to piece together the events of that night. This book reminds me a lot of the movie The Hangover, just on a bit more of a teenage level.  Zoey has to piece together the events leading up to her accident and then the morning after by talking to other people and piecing together the facts.  I really enjoyed this, as it was a bit of mystery. However, there were some aspects that I'm not as crazy about.  It … [Read more...]

Review – Foxy by Pam Grier

foxy

Foxy is a memoir of the actress Pam Grier's life.  Many members of my generation probably know Pam Grier best as the title character in Quentin Tarantino's Jackie Brown. Those who be a bit "wiser" than me would better recognizer Grier from one of the most renowned blaxpoitation films, Foxy Brown.  The book is just a general description of her life, 99% of which I did not know. A few things I learned from reading was her serious relationship with Kareem Abdul Jabar, as he changed his religion to Muslim.  They clashed on the role that women play as Muslims and therefore split up.  Grier also dated Richard Pryor while he was addicted to cocaine and also split from him.  I also learned that Grier was diagnosed with cancer but is know in remission after a long battle. I think the most informative portion of this book was Grier's description of her youth.  Her father was in the military and was passing as white.  However, his family was definitely black, and he was punished for … [Read more...]

*CLOSED* Rock out with the kids! Review and giveaway of The Not-Its! Time Out to Rock

timeout

I generally don't listen to "kids" music.  I tried Laurie Berkner, and there's a couple of her songs that I like, but not really my style.  And while my kids will still let me do it, I try to listen to my old music (within reason, I can't scream along to Buck Cherry when they're in the car). But now there's no more line between kids and adult music.  The Not-Its! have taken that line and rocked it on its side with Time Out To Rock, their second album.  Trust me, your kids will be begging you to turn on this music and you'll have to pretend to be hesitant because if you give in too easily they'll get suspicious.  But trust me, this is a long way from Barney and Raffi - like miles away. From reading the bios of the band members, I saw that one of the singers, Sarah Shannon, was the lead singer of Velocity Girl (remember them?).  So now you can be sure you have authentically rocking music because it is from a former member of a grunge band. So I popped this CD into the car … [Read more...]

Review of The Overnight Socialite by Bridie Clark

overnight

The Overnight Socialite by Bridie Clark is a modern take on My Fair Lady and, therefore, Pygmalion.  Lucy Ellis is a struggling fashion designer living in Manhattan.  She has just had the worst night of her life when Wyatt Hayes plucks her off the street and decides she'll be his project - he'll make her into a Manhattan socialite.  Of course, the usual pattern ensues, but I don't want to completely ruin the entire thing for you.  Suffice it to say, there are obviously a few differences from the original story, enough to change it up a little. I liked this book.  I played my little game of not reading the book description again so was unaware of what the book was really about.  I'm once again glad that I didn't know what I was heading into because I think that made the book better for me.  If I had known that this was based on the same story as My Fair Lady (which lame-o here has never seen), I would have been bored with the book.  Of course, after reading a bit, I figured it … [Read more...]

More (Followers) Monday 7/19

I just discovered (like, really, this morning) More (Followers) Monday.  So of course, I love new followers and wanted to jump in (plus I'm procastinating on the book review I am planning on posting today).  If you would like to join in, click on the button above and find some cool new blogs! About me: I am a 30 year old SAHM to a 4 year old daughter and 2 year old son.  I started blogging in March of this year and feel I've done pretty well in the short time I've been up.  I enjoy reading, crocheting, cross stitching, PC hidden object and dash games, Facebook and the entire internet.  I am also a huge Disney freak and currently trying to push my husband for an August 2011 trip.  I live in the Hudson Valley of NY but never visit NYC.  We have four cats.  I also love entering blog contests so that's part of my procrastination process, along with Baking Life and Frontierville on Facebook (told you I loved Facebook!). I hope you take a moment to follow me today, no matter how … [Read more...]

Downtime

And not the relaxing kind.  We got cable tv installed on Saturday and their database decided that our HD DVR cable box should receive the internet access and not the cable modem.  Couple that with hubs' mess-up of the email on the server and it was a pretty messed up day yesterday. If you emailed me between 4 pm and this morning, I didn't get it.  I have no idea where it is and I'm sorry. This all reinforces my portion of the decision to host our websites elsewhere.  So, who do you recommend for website hosting?  Bring on the  recommendations - I need them quickly! Hopefully I'll be able to have some normal blog posts up this week.  Please forgive me if I don't as it's most likely due to this cable fubar. … [Read more...]

Sunday Stealing 7/18

I had this whole post written out about how I was trying for a BlogHer sponsorship but, duh, I kinda need to be REGISTERED for the conference to enter.  Whatever.  Sigh. Anyway - Sunday Stealing: Meme Of Many Odd Questions, Part Two 23. Do you rent movies often?  No.  We're so bad about watching movies.  I can't really talk about how we watch them as that might incriminate me. 24. Is there anything sparkly in the room you're in?  Um no.  I hope not.  Well, probably some Barbie clothes that are most likely not currently on said Barbie. 25. How many countries have you visited? 2.  US and Canada.  Yep, I'm lame. 26. Have you made a prank phone call?  Oh all the time when I was little, before the days of caller ID and *69. 27. Ever been on a train? Yes, we used to take the train all the time in high school to NYC. 28. Brown or white eggs? white.  Brown eggs make me think of poop. 29. Do you have a cell-phone? Yes, an iPhone 3G. 30. Do you use Chap … [Read more...]

Milano Moments

I could happily eat a whole bag of double chocolate Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies all by my lonesome.  Or even the plain ones, I'm not picky.  Do you remember the commercials where the moms were hiding the Milano cookies all over the house, so their kids and husbands wouldn't find them?  Yeah, I get that now.  Because I am NOT sharing that.  I'll even share Oreos but not Milanos. So now that we've established I'm fat and selfish, I will share something with you (but not the cookies, sorry).  If you visit the Milano Cookies Facebook page, and enter in your Milano Moment, you could win some of the new Strawberry Milano cookies!  All you have to do is "Like" the page and then enter your moment. In the spirit of sharing (but not the cookies, kapesh?), I'm going to tell you about my Milano moment.  It's when both kids are actually napping and I can sneak one (bag) of the cookies all to myself, while watching one of my Tivo'ed guilty pleasures. And since I'm cheap (which is … [Read more...]
