I saw this on another blog and it followed it over to find something fun to do. This is being hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading. Thanks for the fun! To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions… * What are you currently reading? * What did you recently finish reading? * What do you think you’ll read next? I am currently reading Staying Home Is A Killer by Sara Rosett. I recently finished Bundle of Trouble by Diana Orgain (look for a review soon). Next up is Just Let Me Lie Down by Kristin von Ogtrop, courtesy of Hachette. When I review that one, there'll be a giveaway too! … [Read more...]
Earn your MA in Teaching online from USC
This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of USC. All opinions are 100% mine. Are you a current teacher? Are you looking to become a teacher? You probably think you're too busy to get your Masters in Teaching. But you can - online with USC Rossier School of Education. Of course, since this is a teaching degree, fieldwork is combined in with the online work. With the accelerated program you can complete a degree in as little as 12 months. The first students will graduate this May. There is a blog that displays their thoughts on this program so you'll get the real deal from the people who have been through the degree program. And this is no fly-by-night institution. You'll become part of a School of Education that ranked #22 in the United States and #9 among all private universities by US News & World Report. That's a big deal because I know I depended on that magazine when I was looking at colleges. You'll get to become part of the USC Trojans … [Read more...]
Review of The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen
I was thrilled when I found out that Sarah Addison Allen was publishing a new book. I loved her first two books (The Sugar Queen and Garden Spells) and was eagerly awaiting this one, The Girl Who Chased the Moon. I believe it was supposed to be published last year but was pushed out until this year. I waited very patiently and was rewarded greatly when my request was fulfilled at my local library (yes, the same library where this happened - can you believe they let me take out more books?!). The Girl Who Chased the Moon is somewhat of a dual story. Emily is the daughter of a woman named Dulcie who had left the small town of Mullaby years ago in disgrace. Emily comes back to live with her Grandpa Vance (who is 8 feet tall) because Dulcie has died. Dulcie is the subject of some scandal that nobody will talk about, leaving Emily bewildered and lonely. When she takes up with Win Coffey, she finds out what happened and is even more confused. Meanwhile, next door, … [Read more...]

I just signed up with SocialSpark
This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine. I was browsing Twitter last night, trolling for more giveaways to enter. I saw another blogger had posted that she was preparing a SocialSpark post. I was curious enough to wonder what that was so I did a Google search for SocialSpark and landed on something pretty cool. SocialSpark is another pay-to-blog opportunity, but it seems like it offered more than Pay Per Post. When I signed up, I just had to put some code into my footer to ensure that this blog was actually mine (really, who else would actually claim this?) and I was all set to go. I had to fill out a smallish profile with my name and things like a blog description and what I write about. Immediately I had an opportunity to write this post for a decent amount of cash. I just had to post it within 5 days of joining. Pretty easy, really. And, dear readers, if I have more cash, that means more giveaways for you. And … [Read more...]
Cozy on up to a mystery
Let me preface this by saying I never liked mysteries. I thought they were boring and generally associated them with Agatha Christie. However, upon becoming active on Paperback Swap in 2006, I discovered cozy mysteries, also known as cozies. What is a cozy, you ask? Here is a definition that I found from Suite 101. In a nutshell, cozies are light mysteries, usually involving a murder in a small town. Almost all that I've seen have female protagonists who are moms and/or small business owners. They are almost always part of a series, which lends a problem - I must keep up on the series and also start at the beginning. I can't stand starting a series partway in, even if most of the cozy series do summarize the relationships and circumstances from past books. I love cozies because they are fast reads and generally tied up nice and neat at the end of each book. The killer is caught and life gets back to normal. The problem with cozies is that they are … [Read more...]
Take care of your (library) books!
Yes, one would think a book freak like me would know this, especially since I trade on Paperback Swap, where good condition is necessary to be able to swap the book. I went to return books to the library today and put them in the diaper bag along with T's (supposedly) leak-proof cup. Well, that cup leaked all over the one book that I didn't read (A Dark Matter by Peter Straub, if you're wondering). And I went to return it, not realizing it was soaked. A "manager" came out (I guess that's what they are, even in public libraries) and checked it back out to me so I could try to dry it. Of course the book was brand new and expensive. I'm hoping it dries fairly well. Considering what I've seen on some of the books out of that library (water sure doesn't stay like what looked like a pot of coffee on one) I don't think the water-damaged pages are that bad. And if it is...whatever. Not much I can do about it. At least the money will go to the library. So this is my … [Read more...]

This slacker loves it – Review of Slacker Radio iPhone App
As I've mentioned before, I'm weird in that I don't have any music on my iPhone. I have thousands of MP3s stored on our desktop. Instead of taking up valuable space with music, I decided to try OrbLive. Hmm, that's a review for another day. Looking for another solution, I stumbled across the Slacker Radio App. And I kinda loved it (you know, keeping with the whole slacker theme). This is basically an app that is very similar to Pandora but I think it's edgier and works better for my purposes. You can either search for a particular band or a genre. I've found that when you pick a group/band as a station you will get a few songs from that group, then a few from different bands that are like them, then back to one from the group you picked, and so on. The problem with this is that I'm pretty particular about my bands and it really depends on what mood I'm in. You get 6 skips per hour. But I'll tell you a secret - switch stations and you'll get 6 more skips on that … [Read more...]
WWW Wednesdays
I saw this on another blog and it followed it over to find something fun to do. This is being hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading. Thanks for the fun! To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions… * What are you currently reading? * What did you recently finish reading? * What do you think you’ll read next? I am currently reading The Missing by Shiloh Walker and Bundle of Trouble by Diana Orgain. I recently finished Barbara Delinsky's Not My Daughter. I have no idea what I'll read next. Perhaps it will be something in from the library, maybe it will be a book for review. I'm hoping it will be House Rules by Jodi Picoult - I've been dying to read this but resisting buying it hoping I'll get it from the library or Paperback Swap. … [Read more...]
