Too much tech = too much to choose from

One would think, with the plethora of technological advances I have to occupy myself with, I wouldn't be so bored right now.  But there is too much to choose from. I would love to just chat on Facebook, but I have people on there that I friended just to be nice, not to ever really talk to again outside of my status updates. My fave online forum is dead tonight - they're probably all out partying our busy with their families. Not into the games right now on either PC or DS. SO not ready to go through my junk email. Saturday night is NOT for paying bills, just for making them.  *grin* TV - meh. No-tech stuff is calling me - should go continue progress on niece's cross stitch present.  Hopefully it'll be done and framed in two months, but one always has to wonder with me.  Then I move on to T's.  No way I'll even come close to his 2nd birthday.  Maybe I'll have both kids' samplers done, framed and hung by next Christmas.  LOL I just figured out what I'll do … [Read more...]

My review of Paperbackswap.com

About 3 1/2 years ago, I discovered a wonderful site:  Paperbackswap.com.  The easy explanation that it is a site for swapping out your read books (not just paperbacks!).  The only cost to you is the postage to send books to the members that request them. After posting 10 books that you are willing to trade, you will get 2 free credits from the site owners. If there is a book that you want that is not available at that time, you can place yourself on a Wish List for that book.  Unfortunately for new members, there can be hundreds of people in front of you for popular books months before they are even released.  However, if you watch out for your favorite authors' announcements or keep checking Barnes & Noble's Coming Soon page, you should have enough notice to be pretty far up on the list. After you receive a book and read it, what you do with it is up to you.  Of course, all members hope that you'll repost it and send it on to somebody else.  You could also give it … [Read more...]

My review of Chris Bohjalian’s Secrets of Eden

I recently finished Secrets of Eden by Chris Bohjalian.  I've enjoyed a few other of his books, my favorite being Midwives. When I first discovered this author, I really thought that it must be a female writing.  But, no, it's a male, and he can switch points of view between genders surprisingly well.  In this way, he reminds me of Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone (one of my all-time favorite books). This book is centered around  a married couple's apparent murder-suicide in a small Vermont town.  The minister of the local church, who had baptized the wife into his congregation just that morning, is distraught and loses his faith.  The couple leaves behind a teenage daughter and a history of domestic violence. Overall, I enjoyed this book.  It reminded me greatly of another of my favorite authors, Jodi Picoult. However, I found the inclusion of Heather Laurent, an author whose own parents' died in a similar matter, to be unnecessary and distracting.  The only purpose … [Read more...]
